Can I Overcome an Addiction With Willpower?

Addiction Counseling:

Many times an addiction is so strong that willpower alone is not enough to overcome its effects. It is important to learn the skills needed to overcome addictions. Some techniques that are used in helping people with addiction recovery are psychotherapy, hypnosis, self-care, and medication.

What is addiction? Another word for addiction is “enslavement.” Those who are addicted to a substance or behavior are enslaved. Addiction counseling can help you break the bonds of addiction and take over your life once more.

Substance abuse: There are many forms of substance abuse including tobacco, drugs, prescribed medication, and others. These substances have a very powerful effect on the brain and on the body, and it’s sometimes impossible to overcome with willpower alone.

Unfortunately, substance abuse is only one form of addiction. Other addictions include detrimental activities and behaviors such as gambling, excessive working, pornography, over-eating, or even internet addiction. These activities are also known as behavioral addictions.

Pornography: Pornography is a form of addiction. Though it is not a chemical, it can have effects on the brain that is more powerful than a drug or other substance. It changes the brain, and can be difficult to let go of.

Gambling: Gambling is another form of an addiction. It can consume someone’s life and destroy relationships. People who gamble excessively can actually change the way their brain waves function. They rely on gambling to reduce anxiety and feel happiness.

Internet Addiction: In recent years, people have started struggling with internet addiction. Internet addiction is also known as iDisorder, Problematic Internet Use (PIU), or Compulsive Internet Use (CIU). Those with internet addiction spend hours on social media, online games, or online shopping. When these activities interfere with daily lives, this can be considered addictive behavior.

Chronic Relapse

Addiction recovery is very frustrating for many people. Many times there is a period of time where an individual is free from the addiction, only to fall once more. Chronic relapse is when in the addiction recovery process and individual continually returns to their addictive behavior or substance. Addiction counseling can help people through their relapses and guide them on the path to permanent recovery.

There is Hope

Though overcoming addictions can be very difficult, it is possible. Through addiction counseling, individuals can learn the skills and tools they need to become stronger than their addiction. Everyone has a different path to recovery. Each need to find their own path through the process of addiction recovery.
